Gravity Hill - New Paris, Pennsylvania

Experience the Strangeness of Gravity Hill in New Paris, Pennsylvania

Many towns across America, both big and small, have strange phenomena associated with them. For some towns it could be a notoriously haunted building, for others it could be a wave of UFO sightings, or furtive glimpses strange, hairy creatures like the legendary Bigfoot. For the town of New Paris, Pennsylvania their bit of strangeness is Gravity Hill.

Many areas around the world have these "gravity hills" or "spook hills," but the one in New Paris is unique. It is a double gravity hill, which we will get into in a bit.

At Gravity Hill, cars roll uphill, and water even flows backwards. This interesting phenomenon may have a bit to do with optical illusions. Regardless of the cause of the gravity strangeness, it is still a very interesting place to visit. Best of all, it is completely free.

To find Gravity Hill, drive north from Schellsburg on Highway 96 for about 4 miles. Take a left on Bethel Hollow Bridge before you reach the bridge. Drive just over half a mile down the road and bear left when you come to the fork in the road. Continue for another 1.5 miles and make a right when you reach Gravity Hill Road. A few hundred yards down the road, you will find a large "GH" painted onto the road. This is the first gravity spot. The second gravity hill is just over a quarter of a mile down the road. You will find a telephone pole marked "69." Stop there and you will roll uphill again.

When you head out to Gravity Hill, you need to keep a few things in mind. Since many people drive on the road, you need to use your common sense and your rearview mirror to make sure you aren't blocking traffic or at risk of causing an accident. Be courteous to those who are on the road and let them pass if they need.

As soon as the traffic is clear, you can put your car into neutral and it will begin to roll slowly uphill. This will occur at both of the marked spots along the road.

Another trick that you are sure to want to try involves water. Take some bottled water with you and pour it on the road. It will actually flow up the hill, seemingly defying gravity.

Just about everyone will be amazed by Gravity Hill.
